If you are a student or teacher at Hudson High School, you have most likely heard about Fun Friday, which is an opportunity you get when you take Mr. Zustin’s Sociology class. Fun Friday is a heartwarming tradition that takes place every week, creating an opportunity for students to engage with and support special needs students. This special event transforms Fridays into a day of meaningful connection, where both groups come together to build friendships, share experiences, and create a positive and inclusive environment.

“Fun Friday” came to be in the fall of 2016, sparked by a conversation in Mr. Zustins sociology class. Some students were debating what truly defines happiness in life, with answers like money and partying being suggested. Mr. Zustin, however, offered a different perspective, saying, “it was people, and making a difference with individuals” inspired by this belief, he created the program as a way for his students to connect with special needs students and make a meaningful impact. The idea was simple yet powerful: to show that real happiness comes from buildings relationships and positively affecting others’ lives. Through this initiative, students in Mr. Zustin’s class began to spend time with special needs peers, fostering friendship and inclusion while also discovering the joy that comes from helping and learning from each other. Through this unique interaction, students not only learn about empathy and understanding but also gain valuable insights into the importance of community and the power of kindness.
“In a weird way, you never think about school. You’re just in the moment enjoying the experience.” -Mr. Zustin
The program provides benefits to both Mr. Zustins students and the special needs students. During the first period, the students come together to play games in the gym, engaging in fun activities such as just dance and various sports. These activities help promote physical interaction and social bonding between the students. This time allows special needs students to feel included, build friendships, and develop social skills in a relaxed and comfortable environment. During 10th period, Mr. Zustin’s students visit the special needs classrooms, offering academic support and helping with any schoolwork. This assistance not only boosts the students academic confidence but helps them feel empowered.
This perspective captures the true value of the program: it creates an atmosphere of enjoyment and connection, where special needs students can thrive socially and academically without the pressure of the traditional school setting.
Fun Friday fosters empathy, patience, and social skills as they interact with others in an inclusive environment. This experience helps break down stereotypes, promoting a sense of understanding and acceptance of differences. “Many kids live their life between their head”, Mr. Zustin explains. “That voice is our biggest enemy. It can highlight our weaknesses and our deficiencies. What I tell them is that you have to get over yourself when you’re working with a student with special needs, it’s not about you.” The program allows kids who may not be social or conversive, to interact with students who challenge them to step outside of their comfort zone. Students develop leadership skills as they collaborate with the other students, supporting them in activities and learning to adapt their communication. Fun Friday also cultivates a sense of community, as students realize the importance of inclusivity and mutual respect. Ultimately, Fun Friday not only enriches the students’ social and emotional growth, but also creates lasting friendships and a stronger, more compassionate school culture
“Our voice is our biggest enemy. It can highlight our weaknesses and our definencies.”
—Mr. Zustin
Fun Friday has created a lasting impact on both Mr. Zustins students and the special needs students. The program has built a bridge of understanding, empathy, and friendship that transcends traditional classroom boundaries. For the students, it has provided a deeper sense of community and the realization that making a difference in someone else’s life brings a unique sense of fulfillment. Meanwhile, the special needs students benefit from the support, companionship, and academic assistance they receive, which boosts their confidence and sense of belonging. The connections formed through Fun Friday extend beyond the program itself, creating a ripple effect of kindness and inclusion that lasts longer after the day is over. The experience reminds everyone involved that genuine happiness comes not from material wealth or short- lived moments, but from the lasting relationships and positive impacts we make in each other’s lives.
