Hudson sports overall have gained a reputation: other teams don’t want to play us. Certain teams will make it their main goal to beat Hudson because of their strong work ethic and resilience.
The Hudson High School girls volleyball team is off to a great start. The girls kicked off the season with a 6-2 record so far. What will continue this strong season and bond the team has on and off the court?
Head Coach Michael Maurer states, “The season started off strong because of the work the players put in during the offseason and the commitment they have. To keep this going, we’ll need to stay focused in practice, continue improving each week, and not be satisfied with early success.” All players have recognized coach Maurer’s system, which is making the whole program, from the freshman to varsity team, a lot stronger.
Varsity’s back row is strong with players Lani Slater, Libby Michel, Bella Lane and Carolyn Wang. Dominant pin hitters, Maddy Dearstine, Audrey Hopkins, Gianna Tripp and Kara Michel are consistent with strong hits that are difficult to get up for the other teams, plus the middle blockers, Sienna Swain and Natalie Bright are big and intimidating at the net with dependable blocks.
The hustle shows in every play with Maribeth Slater and Evelyn Kenny, the two star setters. Coach Maurer also looks for meaningful contributions from players Cici Schafer and Addison Beniot. This team is tough and will only end up tougher if they continue their good habits and teamwork.
“I think all of our captains (Sienna Swain, Maddy Dearstine and Audrey Hopkins) were chosen because of their outstanding leadership and positivity even when not required to.” Says sophomore setter Evelyn Kenny, while Maurer notes that the captains set the tone on and off the court, and at the same time, leadership comes from many players, not just the captains. It shows come game time that everyone brings amazing intensity to practices and games.
Resilience is necessary for any successful team. Being able to come back from mistakes and a strength in team sports can help teams succeed in the long run. This team has shown durability and tons of power, beating other teams in three sets, or coming back from losing a set and winning the next. They ensure that other teams can fear playing them. Let’s see what Hudson Volleyball has to bring for the rest of their season!
