For high school upperclassmen weighing their college options, Florida offers a wide range of choices–from massive public universities with national reputations to small private colleges steeped in history.
A recent tour of three distinct campuses–the University of Florida, the University of Tampa and Flagler College–highlighted just how different college life can look depending on the setting.
The University of Florida (UF) located in Gainesville is one of the largest universities in the state with nearly 60,000 students.
Its beautiful campus feels like a city of its own, filled with brick pathways, shaded oak trees and constant student activity.
Tour guides emphasized the school’s wide array of academic programs–more than 120 undergraduate majors–and its nationally recognized research opportunities.
Beyond academics, UF’s culture is steeped in tradition, particularly surrounding football at “The Swamp,” the university’s famed stadium.
With its size comes both opportunity and challenge. Students can join countless activities and organizations, but the scale can feel overwhelming at first.
For many, the energy, diversity, and spirit of a major public university make UF an attractive option.
The University of Tampa

In contrast, the University of Tampa (UT) offers a mid–sizzed campus of about 10,000 undergraduates situated right across the river from downtown Tampa. The setting combines historic architecture, with sleek, modern facilities and residence halls.
UT is known for its strong programs in business, communications and in the arts, and its location gives students direct access to internships and job opportunities in the city.
Companies in finance, sports, healthcare and technology all call Tampa home, providing valuable real-world connections.
With a student body large enough to offer diversity but small enough for personalized attention, UT strikes a balance between intimacy and opportunity.
Professors are often accessible, and the campus community is close-knit, though students do note that limited parking is an ongoing challenge.
Flagler College

With roughly 3,000 undergraduates, it is the smallest of the three schools and is centered around the historic Ponce de León Hotel, a landmark of late nineteenth century architecture complete with stained-glass windows and elaborate courtyards.
The college prides itself on its small class sizes and close faculty-student relationships. Programs in business, education and the arts are among its strengths.
Beyond academics, Flagler’s setting in the nation’s oldest city and its proximity to the beach create a unique atmosphere that blends history with a relaxed coastal lifestyle.
Unlike larger universities, Flagler provides a slower-paced, intimate environment where students can build tight-knit connections.
While the range of majors is more limited compared to UF and UT, the school’s character and scale appeal to those seeking a smaller community.
Three Schools, Three Distinct Paths
Together, these three institutions illustrate the range of higher education options within Florida.
The University of Florida offers the scope and tradition of a flagship public university; the University of Tampa provides a modern, mid-sized campus with strong ties to an urban environment; and Flagler College delivers a historic, close-knit community on Florida’s coast.
For students deciding on their next step, the choice often comes down to personal preference–whether you envision yourself in a bustling city, a modern hub or a historic small college setting.
Each school offers not only a different academic environment, but also a unique way of life.
