How did you get into teaching, and what inspired you to start teaching?
I started teaching 19 years ago at my small business, tutoring kids of all ages in Cleveland in the wonderful art of digital animation, STEM, building websites and digital media. Before I started my own business, I worked in two Fortune 500 Companies, Xerox Corporation and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, where I consulted on technology projects. After 27 years of working, I still find myself drawn to one thing – teaching people how to do something. I think it’s the greatest privilege an individual may have…to stand before someone and teach them something. There’s nothing better!
Where did you go to college, and what was the best lesson you learned during that time?
I graduated with an undergraduate degree in Political Science from West Virginia University. I learned quickly that in college, you must manage your time efficiently and focus on getting your work done if you’d like to enjoy campus life outside the classroom. I worked throughout my college years in retail and restaurants and also enjoyed activities in my sorority, Delta Gamma, as well as interning at the West Virginia State Courthouse. I once thought about majoring in law, but I’m so glad I didn’t, as I went into a life of technology and teaching. After six years working in Atlanta, I moved to Pittsburgh to attend graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University. While getting my master’s degree, I worked full-time as a Research Assistant to a doctor experimenting on memory and gaming- really interesting! I am thrilled that I had that opportunity while I received a Master of Public Management degree. A couple of years ago, I just happened to come across some old papers, and I was so excited to see that I had written “I wanted to be a teacher” on my application to go to graduate school.
What is your favorite part of being a teacher?
The students! Also, the other teachers, the administrators, the building and not having to do every single thing by myself. I teach the best students in the world, and I love how they challenge me to learn daily. Don’t tell anyone- but I don’t always have all the answers. My students are so interesting, and they keep me hopping. I never know what’s around the corner in my classroom, and I’m so happy to go to work every day.
What are your hobbies and other interests that you are involved with outside of school?
I really enjoy outdoor activities like running and gardening, plus spending time with my family and friends. I love visiting big cities, trying new things and places, walking, hiking, sometimes completing races, horseback riding, watching British TV, reading – but most of all, just hanging out and chatting with friends and family.
Give a piece of advice that you think students should know.
You’re much stronger than you think you are. You can accomplish much more than you believe, and your goals may be too small. Think big thoughts and trust the process. Do one small thing that scares you (as often as possible) and live outside your comfort zone. If you can dream it- you can probably do it. I never thought I’d accomplish half of the things I’ve done, but I keep doing the small stuff and the big stuff comes along on its own.
