With summer coming to a close, fashion trends curated over the last three months are beginning to make their way into Hudson High School. Every day, new trends are appearing all over social media platforms like Pinterest, Tiktok, and Instagram. These trends adapt and change, and the ones we are seeing today have had some consistent themes. At HHS, students tend to not worry about how others perceive them, usually wearing whatever they want. This freedom to use clothing to express yourself has given creative liberty to some “artists of fashion.”
Today, one of the most popular platforms for fashion trends to be born is through Pinterest. Every day, so many popular trends from Pinterest are seen in the halls of HHS. Some of the most popular trends today being cheetah prints, low rise pants, bows on EVERYTHING, cargo pants and shorts, and Adidas shoes. Although there are so many different styles and trends popular today, these five trends have proved themselves consistent and liked among teens.
Animal prints have always been in one way or another. Throughout the years, the trendy pattern to pick has shifted towards cheetah. As being a symbol for fierce femininity has been huge in fashion lately. What started as a trend for men to show their “dominance” in the early 1900s, the pattern has shifted toward the feminine glance. An article from MAHI Leather says that “the popularity of leopard print will rise and fall but it will never go out of style.” It appears to be a staple in every decade, and popular shops are starting to pick on that. Popular stores like Pac-sun, Edikted, and Zara carry the cheetah print pants, the most popular way to wear the print.
Next, ever since the early 2000s, low rise has been incredibly in trend. Coined as “hip-huggers,” these pants aimed to show off the midriff have been beloved to teenage girls. What was first worn by the male British fashion designer Alexander McQueen turned into a look for mainly females.
These pants have the same goal throughout the years: to enhance the look of the wearer’s waist and body shape. The one change? How low can you go? In the early 2000s, the pants “had dipped as low as three or four inches,” according to Slate Fashion. Since then, the measurements have fluctuated up and down. Gen Z says that when they were in their teens, they were much more rebellious than today’s teens, wearing the jeans at almost two inches. These bottoms are closely related to the Y2K clothing styles, originating in the early 2000s.
Following up we have the 2024 special: the bows. About midway through this year was the birth of the bow craze. With the coquette style trending on Tiktok, bows went strongly with it. Pink, girly looks are everywhere and the bows give off a soft and feminine vibe. Stylist and personal shopper Elisabeth Kassab says that “women are really leaning into their feminine side this year.” While some women are showing their fierceness with the cheetah, others want to show off their soft side, and the bows are laying the ground for that. Whether it’s tying a bow on the back of your shoes, putting it in your hair, or wearing it as a print on a shirt, there are hundreds of options to choose from. On another take, fashion expert Jane Winchester Paradis says that “There is also something about the feminine nature of bows that never goes out of style.” This classical addition will no doubt continue through this school year.
Next up there is a style beloved by females and males. The cargo pants. This style of pants has been the subject of controversy. Skinny jeans vs. cargo pants. Stylist and content creator Jabari Sandifer argues that because of the years that our generation stayed in lockdown during the pandemic, we got used to being comfortable. Skinny jeans on the contrary are much more uncomfortable. Cargo jeans allow for a look to be easily elevated and still be much more comfortable then the every-day skinny jeans. Coming in many variations and colors, the pants can be the center of attention on a daily look. With the help of Off White and Kanye’s Yeezy collection, the cargo pants took off, getting lots of attention.
Last but certainly not least is a trend that many would agree is the biggest trend of 2024. Adidas shoes have been a craze on social media. What went out of style for years finally came back with the development of new styles and colors. The Sambas, Campus’ and Gazelles have absolutely taken off. What drew most of the attention was the colors of the shoes and how they were styled. The Pinterest stylists absolutely laid the road for these shoes’ success.
Trends are huge for today’s fashionistas and teens are always looking for a new way to express themselves. While being highly influenced by the world around them, they still find ways to be unique in who they are and the clothes they put on. With the use of top social media platforms, trends are born every single day.
