We all know that the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk has made the most powerful personalities in the world nervous, starting with the left in this country that can’t stand losing control of the social network. For years inefficiency and censorship have reigned on the blue platform, and the traditional media controlled by the political class based on subsidies, see how they have now lost the leadership on Twitter.
Recently, Elon Musk has released Twitter documents showing that the Democratic party intervened to hide the Hunter Biden scandal. In other words, Tweets related to the president’s son were censored and hidden in order to win an election. The deliberate censorship of information that shapes ideology happens often in dictatorships, and is inadmissible in a country that calls itself “democratic.” American society can see, whether they like it or not, that the president’s son has participated in fraudulent business dealings abroad. The problem is the concealment of that information. The world has a right to know about the allegations and to be able to judge them as freely as it criticizes right-wing scandals. Of course, then people have the right to think as they want and vote for whomever they want.
All this censorship on the platform started when the former Twitter executive blocked the account of the president of the United States at the time, Donald Trump. A group of powerful people silenced the voice of the leader of one of the most relevant countries in the world, thus preventing the free exercise of freedom of speech guaranteed in the first amendment of the constitution. The shameful thing about this is that they canceled Trump while allowing murderers and dictators like Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela, to continue to spew their totalitarian messages.
This censorship policy led to the suspension of thousands of accounts for writing opinions that went against the paradigm. Elon’s arrival at Twitter has marked a radical change in the network. The magnate aims to transform Twitter into a free social network, where everyone has a voice and a place to be informed in real time and without censorship.
Who could be against Twitter allowing people to speak freely? Believe it or not, many democrats are angry about this change. It’s amazing how they repeat words like ‘democracy’ and ‘freedom,’ while defending that politicians and the government should decide what is true and what is not. Do they hate freedom of speech?
The main problem with Twitter is that it usually censors opinions from one side of the political spectrum while promoting views from the other. Radical opinions and hate have to be confronted with arguments, not censorship. Educate, don’t ban. If Kanye West says something crazy on Twitter, society will respond with arguments and he will be corrected. That is what democracy is all about, that everyone has a voice, and that is what Elon Musk wants to achieve. Citizens must have a critical spirit and we cannot behave like those same radicals we criticize. That is why fighting the battle of freedom in front of the media is of vital importance.
Shortly after Elon Musk bought Twitter and fired the company’s management, some politicians came out to criticize him, enveloped in the smoke of populism and ignorance. It is very hypocritical that socialist democrats like Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez try to advise on how to run a business when they have spent their whole lives living off the government. They do not know what it is to create a company, they do not know the work involved, they have no legitimacy to talk about employment when they have not created a single job in the private sector. This political class lives off the people’s taxes, including the $11 billion Elon paid last year.
And still, they have the little shame to tell Elon Musk how to run a business – a business that is now private after he pulled out of the Wall Street stock market. A man who has managed to become the richest person on the planet and who owns companies like PayPal, Tesla, SpaceX and now Twitter. There is merit to what Musk has achieved from nothing, especially when he was making minimum wage in 2008. And of course he knows better than any politician how to create productive employment.
Also, the entrepreneur has received a lot of criticism for firing 70% of Twitter’s workers. However, if by firing all those people, the company continues to function perfectly, it is because their work did not contribute anything. It is sad, but it is the truth. And a successful entrepreneur like the owner of Tesla knows perfectly well that Twitter was not profitable with so many inefficient expenses. Something that politicians should apply in public administrations to increase productivity. But of course, these politicians have never worked in the private sector in their lives and therefore do not understand it. The blue company has too many offices and departments that are not necessary in a technology company that needs more engineers and automation.
What is certain is that the new owner of Twitter faces a big challenge. Many companies such as Apple have announced that they are going to stop investing their money in advertising within Twitter. All this while the social network continues to break records in users per second using the application. As if that were not enough, Elon has announced that he will continue to publish secret reports from Twitter that demonstrate the political corruption and censorship that citizens have experienced over the past few years.
So, is Elon Musk a hero? Well, that depends on what one considers “hero.” He is not Superman, he is not God, not everything he does will be wonderful. Neither he nor anyone else, no person should be defended no matter what he does. We citizens have to be critical and of course there will be decisions with which we do not agree with the entrepreneur. Regardless, Elon Musk is a person who is standing up to all the powerful single-handedly. He is betting all the resources and money he has to stand up for freedom knowing that he may lose it all. This man could be on an island enjoying his $44 billion without gaining powerful enemies, and instead he is opening a fundamental debate. And he is not only a hero for what he is doing with Twitter, but also for the incredible advance for humanity that he has achieved with Tesla and SpaceX.
Today more than ever, the world needs an Elon Musk who stands up for freedom of speech and the main pillars of democracy in the face of a world where corruption, censorship and deceit reign.
