Folk/Indie artist Kahan is known for his raw storytelling. The release of his breakout hit single, Stick Season, in 2022 gained mass attention and has surpassed 1.7 billion streams across platforms. His popularity and following have grown immensely since fans are eagerly waiting for this upcoming release.
Kahan announced on his Instagram that his 4th album, titled The Great Divide, will be released on April 24. In order to tease the album, on Jan. 30, the artist publicly released the title track of the album, The Great Divide, a song that has been long-awaited.
In the midst of his We’ll All Be Here Forever tour in 2024, Kahan debuted The Great Divide and sent fans into a shockwave. Many fans published recordings of the song across social media platforms, and the snippets of the chorus went viral on TikTok years prior to its actual release.
The song reflects kindling an old friendship that stemmed from shared trauma. He opens with, “I can’t recall the last time that we talked. About anythin’ but lookin’ out for cops.” He wrote the song from his point of view, addressing this old friend.
Trauma is clearly pointed out in the lyrics that follow: “We got cigarette burns on the same side of our hands.” He uses burns as a metaphor for mental pain, a shared experience between the two.
Fans have pointed out its similarity in themes to his previously released song, “Orange Juice”. A song that depicts friends reuniting years after a drunk-driving incident that left lingering shared guilt.

The main arc of the song focuses on Kahan’s shared angst with his old friend and shares the message that he only wishes his friend had escaped his troubles and had gone on to live a “normal” life.
He portrays the sense of normalcy through the lyrics, “I hope you settle down, I hope you marry rich. I hope you’re scared of all the ordinary… like murderers, and ghosts, and cancer on your skin.” He references socially deemed fears to emphasize a model of a “normal” life.
The song touches on themes of religion and alludes to religious trauma throughout the lyrics. He uses an abstract reference to stained glass to represent a church in the lyrics, “I hope you threw a brick right into that stained glass.” This further shows built-up angst towards the meaning behind a church he must have acquired in his youth.
He also references driving across the “Twin-State” line. He uses this as a metaphor to represent the underlying theme of division between the two, as he claims his friend “inched” across the line.
Kahan, the protagonist of the story at hand, confesses guilt for not helping his friend and ignoring the problem when he had the opportunity through the lyrics, “stare ahead like everything was fine.”
By the end of the song, Kahan expresses his hope that his friend’s childhood anxieties about the future and death have diminished, and he can see the beauty of life.
This song has strong parallels to a theme that is prevalent in almost every song he has ever released: mental health. Kahan is known for being an advocate for mental health and often emphasizes the importance of reaching out in times of need.
The song is just a sliver of what is to come in his new album. The artist hasn’t released any further details about the remaining songs on the track. Fans can assume childhood memories are the main focus of the album, as the cover for the album appears to be from the point of view of somebody looking out his childhood home’s window into the yard of children playing.
During many concerts, Kahan has highlighted that his childhood immensely shaped the person he is today and often refers back to his home state of Vermont.

Kahan’s exciting announcements don’t stop at an album release; to follow, he has announced The Great Divide North American Tour. This tour was announced on his Instagram on Feb 2, and the Ticketmaster presale takes place the following week.
He announced 23 locations starting in Orlando, FL, and concluding his tour in Seattle, WA. Unlike previous tours, this tour is a stadium tour as his fan base has grown since his last tour.
American singer-songwriter Gigi Perez will be accompanying Kahan during this tour and will be the opening act for all 23 locations. She rose to fame in 2024 with her viral hit, “Sailor Song”. Her music replicates Kahan’s and shares themes of mental health from a heartfelt emotional stance.
Kahan’s team has announced that all tickets resold on Ticketmaster will be sold at face value to ensure all fans have an equal opportunity to obtain affordable tickets. This is a game-changer as tickets sold for such popular artists are being resold at five to ten times the value they were sold at. His team wants to ease the stress of the ticket-purchasing process, as Ticketmaster presales are a very stress-inducing and time-consuming process.
His song has already gained so much attention and was even played during a commercial break at the Grammys. The song is projected to reach the top charts and be one of the most notable songs of the year 2026. Fans can’t describe the excitement for the release of the new album. It marks the beginning of a Noah Kahan comeback, one that is predicted to be monumental.
