In many high schools, the student government plays a vital role in shaping student culture and organizing events. Here at Hudson, it’s no different. Our High School is a versatile environment where students can pursue academics, arts, athletics and leadership opportunities. Among these opportunities, student government stands out where elected people can represent their classmates and make improvements to our school.
At Hudson High School, the student government takes part in organizing a lot of school held events. Even other students who aren’t involved in student government can find many different opportunities through events our student government helps coordinate. Led by teachers Mrs. Gradyan and Mrs Kaltner, our student government is heavily involved in the Homecoming dance, carnation sales, Powderpuff football game, annual blood drive, senior activities, spirit weeks and more.
One change that Hudson High School saw this year is the Snow ball dance. This dance is a combination of our Sadie’s and Winter Formal and couldn’t have happened without the planning and coordination of the student government. Mrs. Gradyan explains “Planning a school dance requires significant time, effort and resources, and it has become clear that school culture is gradually shifting away from smaller dances. While events like Homecoming and Prom continue to be highly anticipated and well-attended, other dances have not seen the same level of enthusiasm. As a result, Student Government focused on adapting events to better align with current student interests and to use time and resources more effectively.”
By making changes to school events, the student government does a great job of seeing what the students want and making things happen. The decision to mix two dances together was determined by the low student attendance at the Sadies dance and Winter Formal last year. Student Government also arranged a fun winter spirit week for students and staff to participate in, with a winter pep rally included, and a fun and entertaining student vs. staff basketball game.
Partnered with the Red Cross, our student government hosted a blood drive to help people in need. They also offered a raffle to win a gift card and snacks to people who donate blood. These blood drives are hosted every fall, winter and spring of each school year, so it gives people many opportunities to be generous.
“Our goal is to create a sense of belonging by involving more students than ever before in our initiatives and events. By listening to student feedback and adjusting our approach, we work to ensure that school activities are enjoyable, meaningful, and accessible to a wider range of students. Ultimately, we hope that these efforts bring joy to students, strengthen school spirit, and help brighten their overall school experience,” says Mrs. Kaltner. A main purpose of Hudson’s student government is promoting community and school engagement. The student government influence in Hudson High School’s culture is huge. There are a number of things they do to help bring the school together. One example is the increased school spirit. Students and staff organize pep rallies throughout the school year to bring all students and staff together and create a school bonding experience for everyone. By organizing these activities, student government helps make Hudson more engaging and inclusive, students have things to look forward to during the school year.
Furthermore, this club helps build an affiliation between the student body and the staff who help run this school. This means listening to what students want, whether its ideas for events or suggestions about school culture. Our council has taken on responsibilities that help community events here in Hudson, they hosted meetings like the “Meet the Candidates Night” for the Hudson City School Board of Education. During this, members of the student government wrote questions for adults that were running for school board positions. This meeting helped our community think about issues that matter to both students and families.
Being a part of student government means being a part of a community and taking part in what your school needs. Student Government at Hudson High School is much more than a club or group. This organization helps shape the culture, traditions, and future for Hudson by offering different opportunities, making school events happen and connecting the school with the outside community. Hudson’s student government helps make things happen.
